Four steps to create a better work space today

My desk is a disaster. It’s covered mostly with sticky notes and months-old papers that need filing or trashed. Which made me wonder, what would it take to create a better work space for myself?

TOSHIBA Exif JPEGSo here are the four steps I’m taking today to create a better work space for myself:

  1. Get rid of the clutter. Yup. You read it here, so hold me accountable. First thing this morning, I’m getting rid of the papers, filing the sticky notes, and putting the smelly markers back in the drawer.
  2. Empty the inbox. This is a constant battle for me… and for many. There are a number of methods, including my personal method, as well as a great system from Michael Hyatt. What I’ve found is that the hardest part is getting it down from 1246 to 17. Once you’re below about 25 messages in your inbox, it’s much easier to keep it there.
  3. Eliminate shortcuts and electronic distractions. My desktop is covered with icons: links to files and programs I never use. The simplest way to eliminate them as a distraction is to simply create a folder on your desktop and drag them all there. Bam. Next, turn off email notifications and close facebook and twitter.
  4. Get a plant or a toy. Seriously. There are a number of studies—including this one—that suggest a plant or interactive inanimate object can have a restorative effect on your focus and productivity. That being said, I thought I’d list a few you can buy yourself for Christmas…

My top three picks for desktop restoration:

The Doctor Who Desk Protector.
Exterminate anyone who touches your desk! The Dalek Desk Protector will guard your stuff. Features a flashing light, motion detector, and 4 Dalek sounds! Simply plug it into a free USB port. No one’s gonna steal your stapler!

The Magnetic Decision Maker.
I guess this one serves a dual purpose. Just move the ball and release. The ball will come to a stop above the right answer. Answers include yes, maybe, definitely, no way, try again and ask a friend. ‘Nuff said.

Canned Unicorn Meat
Ok, so interactive? Maybe not. But a great conversation piece? Yes. And helpful on those days when you forget to pack your lunch? Definitely.

I wonder if it’s gluten free…

Ok, now get back to work…
